Preparation
Human hair pieces should be washed and conditioned before placing on the client’s head. This removes any residue that may be left from the manufacturing process. With wefted hair pieces, hair is doubled over the weft and sewn. Therefore silkier and straighter styles tend to slip out. Check the weft (tracks) for unusual gaps and reinforce the loose areas by sewing through or by applying a water proof adhesive (i.e. bonding glue). Reinforcement will prevent any excessive shedding that may occur. Some shedding is normal when using hair pieces.
Basic Hair Care
The design of your hair style is only the first step. Proper care of client’s own hair, together with extensions, will keep the hair style healthy and beautiful. The following are some basic recommendations. Any professional can tailor them to suit the needs of the client’s hairstyle and lifestyle. Whether it’s weave style or braid style, hair should be shampooed and conditioned regularly. Dirt, natural hair oils, styling residue and sweat will tangle and mat the client’s own hair as well as the extensions. Clients must maintain their scalp in healthy condition by cleaning with witch hazel or a similar product with mild astringent properties.
Detangling
Always use a conditioning solution when detangling dry hair. An inexpensive detangling solution can be made mixing 1/4 conditioner and 3/4 water. Gently detangle hair extensions in the morning and before going to bed using a metal or plastic wide tooth comb. More importantly, extensions must be detangled before each wash.
Perming
UNIKO TRADING, INC. offers wide range of curly and wavy human hair extensions. If a client chooses to perm their extensions instead, use a gently formula. Again, we do not recommend perming because human hair extensions have already been chemically processed.
Washing and Drying
When washing extensions, do not rub or massage the hair. Allow the water shampoo mixture to run through hair. When drying, never rub or roll the hair in the towel. Dry by gently squeezing the water out. Keeping hair extensions clean prolongs their life, but avoid washing too frequently or using hair products that contain harsh detergents.
Sleeping with Extensions
Hair must be dried thoroughly before going to bed. To prevent tangling and to maintain style, long extensions should be braided into one big braid and short styles wrapped in a silk scarf.
Coloring
Human hair is composed of many colors rather than a single color the eye may see. Therefore, clients with hair color lighter than black or dark brown will encounter some difficulty in finding a match with one-tone extensions. The following suggestions will help you in finding a match:
1. The easiest solution is to color the client’s hair to match the one- tone extension.
2. If coloring client’s own hair is not an option, the extension itself can be colored. Generally, coloring extensions is discouraged since the extensions have already been chemically processed. If the extension must be colored, always select a lighter extension and color it darker to match the client’s hair using a no- or low- peroxide colorant. Consult with a professional and strand test before coloring the whole extension.
3. Blending two or more colors of extensions is the safest way to match the client’s hair color. Hi-lights and low-lights can be achieved by this method.
